Freeze The Pain Away
At Morton's Neuroma Center cryosurgery is a revolutionary treatment for individuals suffering from Morton’s Neuroma. In the past, this painful thickening of the tissue surrounding a nerve in one of the metatarsals required invasive surgery that did not always provide lasting relief.
Cryosurgery is less invasive than traditional surgery and provides a better outcome for patients suffering from pain, numbness, or discomfort from Morton’s Neuroma. Morton's Neuroma Center of New York City can help you learn about your condition and provide state-of-the-art treatment for an excellent outcome for patients nationwide.
Better Outcomes
People with Morton’s Neuroma have pain and discomfort near the ball of the foot, at the base of the toes. This pain is caused when pressure or friction on the metatarsals, the long bones of the foot, causes the tissue around one of the nerves between the heads of the metatarsals to swell. Pressure on the nerve can lead to pain, numbness, or the sensation of a small mass on the bottom of the foot.
Cryosurgery combines minimally invasive surgery with intense cold that targets tissues inside the body. At Morton's Neuroma Center cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma is treated with a narrow wand that is inserted into the foot via a small incision so that freezing nitrogen can be directed toward the swollen tissue around the nerve, shrinking it down. This highly effective approach resolves symptoms in 85% of patients with Morton’s Neuroma. Some patients will need a second treatment to get total relief. We are proud to offer cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma for local patients as well as those traveling to receive care. Our podiatrists care about providing treatments that dramatically improve your comfort and quality of life.
A Precise Way to Ice Out Pain
Like cryotherapy, cryosurgery harnesses the power of cold but directs it precisely where it is needed inside the body. Cryosurgery usually takes about twenty-five minutes to perform and only requires the use of a local anesthetic. Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma has a much lower incidence of side effects than surgical removal of the nerve—called a neurectomy—which comes with a relatively high risk of returning or increased nerve pain.
If conservative treatments like changing your footwear, taking anti-inflammatory medications, or having cortisone injections are not adequately relieving the symptoms of your Morton’s Neuroma, cryosurgery is an excellent option. Cryosurgery can drastically reduce or eliminate the pain and discomfort you are experiencing.

Treatment in Minutes
A local anesthetic will be administered for your comfort during the procedure. A small incision is made near the affected nerve. Your surgeon will use this incision to introduce the cryosurgery wand and direct a blast of cold nitrogen onto the nerve. This freezes the outer part of the nerve, shrinking it down. Because the incision is very small, only a bandage is required to close it.
Little to No Downtime
You can put weight on your foot immediately, and most Cryosurgery patients feel good enough to return to work and other routine activities the day after surgery. Your surgeon may prescribe antibiotics to prevent the risk of infection. Mild bruising in the treatment area is possible but will resolve in a couple of days.
Experience Foot Freedom
Once the surgery site has healed, most of our cryosurgery patients will experience significant or total pain relief. However, in rare cases, patients require a second treatment to achieve full symptom relief. We are always here to answer your questions and help you make a complete and successful recovery.
Unlike surgical removal of the nerve, which can prompt the formation of a painful condition called a Stump Neuroma, cryosurgery comes with a very low risk of side effects. There is a small risk of inadequate symptom relief, in which case the procedure can be repeated to shrink the affected nerve completely.
Most health insurance providers will cover some, if not all, of the cost of cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma. For our cryosurgery patients without insurance, we offer financing options to help you afford your treatment.
Neurectomy surgery removes the nerve tissue that is causing pain. Although this approach can sometimes provide relief, many patients see a return of symptoms from the nerve growing partly back, which is called stump formation. Cryosurgery freezes the outside of the nerve without eliminating it, reducing the chance of stump formation.
